Kleine Momente abseits des Pfades
In Japan gibt es das Wort ma (間), zu deutsch „Zwischenraum“, „Pause“ oder „Leere“. Anders als die wörtliche Übersetzung nahelegen würde, steht ma für ein umfassendes Konzept, bei dem die Räume zwischen und um den Dingen zu einem zentralen Aspekt des Objekts, der Kunst, eines Gebäudes oder einer Situation werden. Ein einzelner Moment, nicht mehr als ein Fragment. Etwas, das im Alltag leicht übersehen oder vermissen wird.
Ma ist eines meiner japanischen Lieblingswörter geworden und beeinflusst meine Fotografie. Der Fokus auf kleine Momente und Fragmente abseits des „klassischen Weges“ schafft freie Fläche, Räume für Interpretation und Inspiration. Und ab und zu entfaltet sich für den Betrachter eine ganz eigene Geschichte hinter dem Bild.
During my trip to Japan, I came across the word ma (間). It can be roughly translated into English as “space,” “pause,” or “emptiness” – a translation that can be misleading. In Japanese, ma describes a concept in which the spaces between and around things become a central aspect of the object, the artwork, a building, or a situation that we observe. A space between things that, at first glance, seems like just a simple moment. A fragment. Something often overlooked or missed.
ma has become one of my favorite Japanese words. Perhaps because, at its core, it also reflects the approach I try to take in my photography. Details – or “in-between moments” – are, in my view, a wonderful means of opening up space for interpretation. And when that works, a simple photograph becomes a canvas for individual stories.
